Paris –
The death of South Africa’s ambassador to France, Nkosinathi Emmanuel “Nathi” Mthethwa, has sent shockwaves through diplomatic and political circles in both Paris and Pretoria, after his body was discovered on Tuesday morning at the foot of a luxury hotel in the French capital.
According to the French newspaper Le Parisien, Mthethwa fell from the 22nd floor of a Hyatt hotel in the Porte Maillot district of western Paris. He was last seen on Monday evening, before his wife alerted police about his disappearance after receiving what was described as a “disturbing” message from him.
The following morning, his body was found, prompting French authorities to open an urgent investigation into the circumstances of his death.
So far, the Paris prosecutor’s office has not issued any official statement determining the cause of death, while police have declined to provide additional details.
Some French and international media outlets have raised the possibility of suicide, while others suggested the death might have been accidental—leaving the case shrouded in uncertainty until the results of the investigation and autopsy are released.
South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) has also refrained from releasing official details, awaiting developments through diplomatic channels.
Mthethwa, 57, was one of South Africa’s most prominent political figures in recent decades.
He previously served as Minister of Police, playing a key role in efforts to reform the security sector.
He later headed the Department of Arts and Culture.
In 2023, he was appointed South Africa’s ambassador to France, beginning a new chapter in his political and diplomatic career.
The news has sparked deep sorrow in South Africa, where Mthethwa was a well-known politician and a senior figure in the African National Congress.
In France, the diplomatic community has expressed shock at the incident, while many await the official investigation to clarify whether the death resulted from suicide, an accident, or other factors.
Despite numerous initial reports, the case remains surrounded by mystery, especially in the absence of confirmation from either French or South African authorities regarding the direct cause of death.
The coming days are expected to bring more clarity once forensic examinations and the autopsy are completed, shedding light on an incident that has shaken diplomatic relations between Paris and Pretoria.
