As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, football fans are eagerly awaiting the final six qualifying teams, which will be determined through the European and Intercontinental playoffs taking place next March. These matches will decide the remaining spots to join the 42 teams already qualified.
Six national teams are preparing to compete for the final slots at the 2026 World Cup, with their fate set to be decided in the European and Intercontinental playoffs scheduled for March. The tournament will bring the total number of participants to 48, hosted across the United States, Mexico, and Canada next summer.
A total of 16 teams will compete in the European playoff—12 of which finished second in their qualifying groups, in addition to four teams that topped their UEFA Nations League groups but failed to secure a top-two spot in the World Cup qualifiers.
The teams have been divided into the following tiers:
Tier 1: Italy, Denmark, Turkey, Ukraine
Tier 2: Poland, Wales, Czech Republic, Slovakia
Tier 3: Ireland, Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Kosovo
Tier 4: Romania, Sweden, North Macedonia, Northern Ireland
The playoff will consist of four paths, each containing four teams. Each path will feature a single-leg semifinal followed by a single-leg final, with the winner from each path securing a ticket to the World Cup. Semifinals are set for March 26, and the finals will be played on March 31.
The global playoff will feature six teams from different continents competing for the last two qualification spots.
Jamaica and Suriname will represent CONCACAF after finishing as the best runners-up in the final round of qualifiers.
Iraq and the Democratic Republic of the Congo will advance directly to the final round due to their higher FIFA ranking, while the remaining four teams will compete in the semifinals for a place in the final matches.
The Intercontinental Playoff will run from March 23 to 31, while the World Cup draw will be held in Washington, D.C., on December 5.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will kick off on June 11, with the final scheduled for July 19.
