In a move that redefines the boundaries of interactive AI, Google announced the development of its AI tool Gemini, now capable of browsing websites and interacting with them directly as real users would. This positions Gemini as one of the most advanced tools in the tech giants’ race to shape the future of human-machine interaction.
According to a report by The Verge, Google has equipped its AI tool Gemini with new capabilities that allow it to visit websites, fill out forms, and check page performance in ways that closely mimic human behavior.
The updated version, named Gemini 2.5 Computer Use, was showcased by the company in an official blog post supported by videos demonstrating practical applications such as interface testing, survey completion, and direct data retrieval from websites.
Google explains that these capabilities differ from traditional tools, as they do not rely on APIs but instead interact directly with websites through its own browser, offering flexibility akin to how humans navigate the web.
The company had previously tested this model in several projects, including Project Mariner, which allowed AI tools to automatically add products to shopping carts based on pre-supplied lists.
This development comes amid an intense AI arms race: OpenAI recently launched ChatGPT Apps, allowing users to access multiple applications within ChatGPT, while Anthropic introduced a similar tool for its Claude model last year.
Google emphasizes that Gemini outperforms competitors in performance tests on both computers and mobile devices, even though it does not function as a standalone computer — the browsing feature is limited to websites accessible via the browser.
With this move, Google brings the world closer to a new era where AI can execute tasks autonomously on the web — from browsing to decision-making — opening the door to a new generation of applications, possibilities, and perhaps challenges as well.
