OpenAI Quietly Rolls Out ChatGPT Translate Translation Service

OpenAI has rolled out ChatGPT Translate, a standalone translation website designed to compete directly with Google Translate.

The service supports more than 50 languages and features a familiar layout, with two text boxes for source and translated text, along with a language selection menu. However, Ukrainian is notably missing from the list of supported languages. While users can translate from Ukrainian into other languages, translating into Ukrainian is not currently supported.

One of ChatGPT Translate’s distinguishing features is the ability to adjust translation tone using preset styles such as “natural,” “academic,” “business,” or even “like a child,” offering more control over how translations read.

Compared to Google Translate, ChatGPT Translate has more limited functionality. It currently works only with text and does not yet support document, image, or full webpage translation. On desktop, translations are limited to typed text, while mobile browsers add voice input support. Image translation has been announced but was not available at launch.

Translation capabilities were previously part of the main ChatGPT interface, but OpenAI has now separated them into this dedicated service. At the moment, there is no standalone mobile app for ChatGPT Translate.

OpenAI has not revealed which language model powers the service and did not issue a formal announcement regarding its launch.
