Sources told CNN that the United Kingdom has stopped sharing intelligence with the United States regarding ships suspected of drug trafficking in the Caribbean region.
According to the report, Britain halted cooperation because it “does not want to be complicit” in U.S. military strikes, which it considers “illegal.”
The decision marks a significant shift in London’s relationship with one of its closest allies and key intelligence-sharing partners, reflecting growing concerns about the legality of U.S. military operations in Latin America.
The U.K. maintains control over several territories in the Caribbean, where its intelligence assets are based. For years, it has assisted Washington in locating suspected drug-smuggling vessels, allowing the U.S. Coast Guard to intercept them, detain their crews, and seize the narcotics. This intelligence was typically shared with the “Joint Interagency Task Force South,” a Florida-based task force that includes representatives from several partner nations and works to combat drug trafficking.
However, since the U.S. began launching deadly strikes against boats in September, Britain has grown increasingly concerned that the intelligence it provides could be used to select targets. According to the sources, British officials believe that these strikes — which have killed 76 people — violate international law, and the suspension of intelligence cooperation began more than a month ago.
