In a groundbreaking move for Spanish football, FC Barcelona is set to face Villarreal in Miami, marking the first-ever official La Liga match to be played outside Spain — an event expected to attract global attention and generate huge financial rewards for both clubs.
According to Spanish newspaper AS, both Barcelona and Villarreal are expected to earn between €5 million and €7 million each for participating in the highly anticipated match, which will take place at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami this December. This marks a historic first for La Liga, as an official league fixture moves beyond Spanish borders.
The report added that the payments are meant to cover travel and organizational costs, as well as initiatives to make it easier for fans to attend the game. Villarreal president Fernando Roig confirmed that the club will cover all travel expenses for its supporters, ensuring their presence in the stands without any additional cost.
La Liga officially announced the match will be held on December 20, following approval from UEFA. League president Javier Tebas described the event as “historic,” emphasizing that it “takes Spanish football to a whole new level.”
Notably, La Liga had previously attempted to host a match abroad in 2018 between Barcelona and Girona, but the plan was scrapped due to opposition from clubs, players, and fans. This time, however, the league has successfully brought the idea to life.
