The tech platform The Verge has announced that Google Photos has begun offering photo-editing capabilities powered by the new “Nano Banana” AI model on iPhone devices. This feature was previously exclusive to Android, making this update an important step by Google to broaden the reach of its AI-based tools and make them accessible to a wider audience.
The new feature relies on a text box inside the app, allowing users to type a detailed description of the edit they want—such as changing the background, removing an unwanted object, or adjusting colors and lighting. The model then understands the request and applies it directly to the image stored on the device. A major advantage of this system is that it works locally without uploading photos to servers, which improves speed and protects user privacy.
In addition, the app has received a completely refreshed editing interface that makes it easier and faster to access both traditional professional editing tools and newer AI-powered ones. These tools include enhanced filters, fine-detail adjustments, and new effects that can transform ordinary photos into entirely different artistic styles.
The update also introduces an advanced AI-powered photo recognition feature. Users can type questions in a dedicated search box—such as “Show me beach photos” or “Where are the pictures where I’m smiling?”—and the system searches the library and responds accurately.
One of the most notable additions is the significant expansion of language support. Besides English, the model can now understand commands written in 17 different languages, making it far more accessible globally.
It is worth noting that Google unveiled the “Nano Banana” model a few months ago and initially integrated it into its Gemini AI system before rolling it out more broadly. The model has gained widespread attention due to its fast processing capabilities and its ability to perform advanced photo edits in a simple and intuitive way.
