In yet another incident raising questions about the reliability of AI systems, “Grok”, the chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s company xAI, has come under fire after spreading false information about the death of U.S. activist Charlie Kirk.
As videos of the shooting incident involving Kirk circulated on X, Grok repeatedly claimed that Kirk was “fine,” dismissing the footage as nothing more than a “meme” or “edited clip with effects.” In multiple conversations, the chatbot insisted the videos were comedic fabrications before later acknowledging that Kirk had, in fact, been killed.
The issue didn’t stop there. Grok also repeated the name of a Canadian man who was mistakenly identified by users on X as the shooter, further fueling the spread of false narratives in the aftermath of the attack.
This isn’t Grok’s first misstep. Previously, it was caught spreading misleading claims about the 2024 U.S. presidential election, raising serious concerns about the dependability of a chatbot trained heavily on posts from X.
While Grok has gained popularity on X as a quick reference tool (or even a source of humor), these incidents highlight the risks of relying on AI for real-time news and sensitive topics without proper human verification.
