In a bold move to expand its footprint in the smart devices market, Amazon is developing two new augmented reality (AR) smart glasses, targeting two different user groups: everyday consumers and delivery drivers. This step comes as the AR glasses market shows signs of revival after years of setbacks.
The two models are internally codenamed:
Jayhawk: Designed for consumers, featuring a full-color display in one lens, built-in microphones, speakers, and a camera. It will be more compact and stylish compared to its counterpart, with a planned launch between late 2026 and early 2027.
Amelia: Built for delivery drivers, focusing on reducing travel time and improving efficiency. It’s expected to roll out as early as Q2 2026.
Amazon is working with Chinese company Meta-Bounds, a specialist in AR technologies, to develop the glasses. The move positions Amazon alongside tech giants like Meta, with its Ray-Ban and Hypernova glasses, and XReal, which continues to release updated AR models—signaling a renewed effort to succeed in a market once marked by the failure of Google Glass.
It’s worth noting that Amazon already offers Echo Frames, a pair of smart audio glasses that allow users to listen to music, take calls, and interact with Alexa. However, they lack any AR display capabilities, making the upcoming "Jayhawk" and "Amelia" a potential game-changer for the company.
