Jaco Cilliers, the Special Representative of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) in the Palestinian territories, painted a grim picture of the situation in Gaza following the recent ceasefire, describing a level of devastation and human suffering never seen before.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, Cilliers called Gaza “the most destroyed place on Earth,” noting that the endless scenes of rubble and ruin reflect the immense tragedy endured by civilians who have lost their homes, safety, and livelihoods.
đź’” Humanitarian Desperation on Every Level
Cilliers described residents searching through the debris for remnants of their belongings, while children stand in long lines for food and water, as families struggle to secure shelter, sustenance, and clean drinking water.
He added that the UN estimates around 25 million tons of debris are piled across Gaza — a staggering amount that must be cleared before any reconstruction can even begin.
🏚️ A Dire Health and Environmental Crisis
The UN official warned that Gaza’s health and environmental conditions are extremely dire, explaining that waste management facilities are operating under harsh circumstances, raising fears of disease outbreaks due to the collapse of sanitation and hygiene systems.
He noted that tens of thousands of families are living in overcrowded spaces lacking proper health conditions, which worsens the water and sewage crises and intensifies residents’ suffering amid severe shortages of food and medicine.
Despite this devastating reality, Cilliers emphasized that the resilience and determination of Gaza’s people offer a glimmer of hope — proof that even amid unimaginable loss, the spirit of survival and rebuilding still endures.
