Microsoft Plans to Reduce Nvidia Dependence with In-House AI Chips
Microsoft is outlining long-term plans to develop its own AI hardware, aiming to rely less on Nvidia as computing demands grow.
Qualcomm has officially announced its latest flagship processor for high-end Android smartphones — the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 — bringing major improvements in performance, power efficiency, and on-device AI experiences.
The chipset is built on the third generation of the Oryon CPU, featuring two prime cores clocked at up to 4.6 GHz and six performance cores reaching up to 3.62 GHz.
According to Qualcomm, the new CPU delivers 35% better power efficiency, contributing to an overall 16% improvement in system-on-chip efficiency.
The updated Adreno GPU boosts gaming performance by up to 23%, while reducing power consumption by around 20%. Meanwhile, the upgraded Hexagon NPU achieves a 37% increase in AI performance compared to the previous generation, with improved energy savings. Together with the Snapdragon Sensing Hub, these advancements enable more personalized AI experiences that evolve over time.
On the imaging side, the processor supports an advanced ISP (Image Signal Processor) capable of handling APV professional video encoding, along with AI-powered frame-by-frame enhancements. Other features include intelligent autofocus, smart exposure adjustments, and auto white balance tuning.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 also integrates the X85 modem, first revealed earlier this year, which reduces gaming latency by up to 50% thanks to AI-enhanced Wi-Fi technology.
Major Android smartphone manufacturers are expected to adopt the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in their upcoming flagship devices soon.
