In a move that’s reigniting privacy concerns, Meta has rolled out a new Instagram update that allows artificial intelligence to scan the photos stored on your phone — all to find the ones “worth sharing.”
According to a report by The Verge, the AI can now analyze all images on your device — whether you’ve posted them or not — to pick out your best shots and even suggest edits before you upload them. Meta claims the goal is to “discover hidden gems” buried among screenshots and random photos cluttering your gallery.
Surprisingly, this feature is enabled by default, and users must manually turn it off in the app’s settings.
Reports also suggest that Meta periodically uploads selected photos from users’ devices to its servers for up to 30 days to help train its AI models — though the company insists these images won’t be used for ad targeting.
This comes after Meta admitted last year that it had already used user posts and photos dating back to 2007 to train its artificial intelligence systems.
