Hackers Claim Massive Nintendo Breach

Cybersecurity

A notorious hacking group known as Crimson Collective has claimed responsibility for a cyberattack on Nintendo, a company well-known for its strict protection of intellectual property. Cybersecurity firm Hackmanac shared what appears to be a screenshot from the attackers, allegedly showing folders with Nintendo’s production assets, developer files, and backups. However, Nintendo has not released any official statement, so it’s unclear whether the hack actually happened or if the screenshot was fabricated.

Crimson Collective recently carried out a confirmed cyberattack on Red Hat, stealing about 570GB of data from the company’s GitHub repositories. After Red Hat refused to pay a ransom, the hackers’ extortion attempt failed, and the company began working with authorities to investigate the incident.

If the claim about Nintendo turns out to be true, the group may be attempting the same extortion strategy—threatening to leak the stolen data unless paid.

Cyberattacks like this are becoming increasingly common in the gaming world. Companies such as Rockstar Games, Insomniac Games, and CD Projekt Red have all suffered major breaches in recent years, with leaked source code and sensitive files appearing online.

Still, Nintendo is known for its secrecy. Unless customer or personal data was affected—which would legally require disclosure—the company is unlikely to comment publicly. Until there’s confirmation from Nintendo, the alleged Crimson Collective breach remains unverified.
