With a single decisive goal, Ghana has rekindled its footballing glory, becoming the fifth African nation to secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup — marking a triumphant return after years of inconsistency.
Ghana officially booked its ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Comoros on Sunday, sealing the top spot in Group 9 of the African qualifiers.
Mohammed Kudus scored the match’s only goal in the 47th minute, finishing off a precise cross from Thomas Partey, sparking celebrations among the “Black Stars” fans who have long awaited such a moment.
With this win, Ghana joins Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, and Algeria as the fifth African nation to qualify for the upcoming tournament, which will be held in North America. This marks Ghana’s fifth World Cup appearance, following participations in 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022 — including a historic quarterfinal run in 2010.
The qualification comes after a turbulent period for the national team, which suffered an early exit from the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, leading to the dismissal of Irish coach Chris Hughton and the appointment of Otto Addo.
It’s worth noting that Comoros was the only team to defeat Ghana during the qualifiers, claiming a 1–0 victory in the first leg back in November 2023.
In the same group, Mali cruised past Madagascar with a 4–1 win, thanks to goals from Lassine Sinayoko, Dorjelis Nene, and Gaoussou Diarra, while Central African Republic edged Chad in a thrilling 3–2 encounter.
