Apple Reportedly Planning First Touchscreen MacBook Pro for 2026

According to Ming-Chi Kuo from AppleInsider, Apple is preparing to introduce touchscreen technology to its Mac lineup for the first time, with an OLED MacBook Pro expected to enter mass production in late 2026.

Kuo shared the update on X, explaining that Apple’s move reflects years of observing iPad user behavior, where touch controls have shown to boost productivity and usability in certain situations. He believes this shift marks a significant step toward blurring the line between the Mac and iPad.

The insider suggests that mass production could start by the end of 2026, pointing to a possible launch in Q4 of that year or early 2027 — in line with Apple’s usual fall release window for Macs.

In addition to the high-end model, Kuo reports that Apple is also developing a more affordable MacBook powered by an A-series chip, the same family of processors used in iPhones. This entry-level model may begin mass production in late 2025, with a second-generation version potentially arriving in 2027. Apple is also said to be considering touch input for this lower-cost MacBook in the future.

Apple’s most recent MacBook Pro lineup launched in October 2024, featuring M4 processors and Liquid Retina XDR displays with 120Hz refresh rates. While impressive, the lineup still lacks OLED screens — a technology Kuo insists will define Apple’s next wave of laptops. Previous supply chain leaks have also pointed to 2026 as the year OLED Macs finally debut.

Historically, Apple has resisted touchscreens on laptops, a stance famously reinforced by Steve Jobs back in 2010, when he dismissed vertical touch surfaces as uncomfortable and impractical. If Kuo’s latest prediction proves true, Apple’s adoption of touchscreen Macs would mark a major philosophical shift — one many Mac users have been requesting for years.

The upcoming M5 MacBook series had once been rumored for release by the end of this year, but Kuo now believes a 2026 timeline is more likely. This raises the possibility that touchscreen and OLED technology could debut alongside the M6 generation instead.
